Microsoft is the Tech South West Technology Partner for 2025 and is supporting the delivery of Growth Forge, an accelerator for tech firms of all sizes in the South West.
In today’s rapidly evolving digital landscape, small businesses in South West England have a unique opportunity to leverage artificial intelligence (AI) to drive growth, innovation, and efficiency. AI technology, once the domain of large corporations, is now accessible to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), offering transformative benefits that can help them thrive in a competitive market.
When it comes to productivity, the UK currently ranks sixth in the G7 cohort. SMBs make up 99.9% of all businesses, 50% of GDP and 60% of all employment, yet just 50% are currently leveraging AI in some shape or form, which puts them at risk of being left behind in a rapidly changing tech landscape.1. Hit most by the recent minimum wage and NI increases, SMBs are at risk of missing out on the transformative power of AI, often due to a lack of understanding and credible guidance.
For small businesses there are perceived and real barriers to entry that need to be addressed such as cost, lack of expertise or perhaps fear of change. We need to explore these issues and take some pragmatic steps to address them.
The AI Advantage
AI technology can revolutionise various aspects of business operations, from streamlining processes to enhancing customer engagement. For small businesses in South West England, adopting AI can lead to significant improvements in productivity, cost savings, and overall business performance.
- Enhanced Customer Service: AI-powered chatbots and virtual assistants can provide round-the-clock customer support, answering queries and resolving issues promptly. This not only improves customer satisfaction but also frees up valuable time for employees to focus on more strategic tasks.
- Data-Driven Decision Making: AI can analyse vast amounts of data to provide actionable insights, helping businesses make informed decisions. Whether it’s understanding customer preferences, predicting market trends, or optimising inventory management, AI-driven analytics can give small businesses a competitive edge
- Marketing and Sales Optimisation: AI can automate and personalise marketing campaigns, targeting the right audience with the right message at the right time. This leads to higher conversion rates and more efficient use of marketing budgets. Additionally, AI can assist in creating compelling sales proposals and presentations, speeding up the sales cycle 2
Where to start? Introducing Microsoft Copilot: The UI for AI
Microsoft believes that the world of work will change very rapidly, with organisations of all sizes capitalising on this new wave of AI innovations. It starts with every employee having a Copilot – their trusted AI assistant. Copilot understands you and your work context, and it provides a consistent user experience to interact with AI. Agents augment Copilot by adding skills and knowledge to automate tasks and business processes.
Over the past two years, businesses across industries have reimagined the way they work with Copilot – making them more productive, more creative, saving them time and saving money. Just like every other major technological shift – from the internet to the cloud – true transformation happens at scale. And to achieve the real benefits of AI, every organisation will need to broadly adopt this new way of working.
The AI adoption curve starts with enabling access, to then look at how to redesign business processes to realise the value of AI whilst ensuring the appropriate governance in terms of security and compliance.
Supporting AI Adoption
So how can you get started on your AI journey? Just about every function can benefit from AI, the key is to pick a process and get started. For example, improving case handling time for customer service, or streamlining creative development in marketing or speeding up the product development process.
It’s important to prioritise staff training, adoption and change management. Getting tangible business benefits from AI isn’t going to happen by just turning it on, employees need tangible guidance on how to use and experiment with this technology and apply it to their daily tasks.
Further, having the ability to track and understand how AI is being used across your organisation, how different groups and functional areas use AI differently, where further enablement and best practices could drive even more impact, you can measure and grow the impact across your organisation.
To support the adoption of AI across South West England, various initiatives and programmes have been launched, including a free AI skilling course, specific for small businesses in the region, with modules focused on specific areas of opportunity for small business, such as how AI can be used to enhance customer service.
With the support of regional initiatives and tech clusters, small businesses can harness the power of AI to achieve remarkable growth and success.
As AI continues to evolve, the potential for small businesses to thrive in the digital age is limitless. Embracing AI is not just a strategic move; it’s a necessity for staying competitive and achieving long-term success in today’s dynamic business environment. With Copilot Chat providing a free entry point for teams to explore and ideate the possibilities, dedicated small business training and the support of Tech South West, there is no end to the possibilities.
